SEO EXPLAINED

Search Engine Optimisation otherwise known as SEO, is the term given to describe the process which is applied to a website in order to increase the amount of web traffic ( visitors ) it receives from search engines. The aim of SEO is to fine tune your website to make it more attractive to the search engines for certain targeted keyword phrases than your other competitors.

The Search Engine Optimization process is not a once off fix, but instead an often complex and ongoing task involving both on-page and off-page techniques.

What is Search Engine Optimisation

WHY DO I NEED TO OPTIMISE MY WEBSITE FOR SEARCH ENGINES?

These days everyone wants to have a modern looking web page with flash animation, banners and complex navigation menus, which is fine however it’s no good spending all that money and time if your website cannot be found or indexed correctly by the search engines.

In short, you end up with a really nice looking website that generates / attracts minimal traffic because it cannot be found by the search engines.

With so many websites on the web and growing every day has meant that your number of competitors has also increased, thus making your chances of returning high in the results for your targeted keywords all that more difficult. The flow on effect is that your competitors are no doubt doing everything possible to make their website more appealing through SEO.

It is for this very reason that you should consider optimising your website to ensure you achieve optimal performance and a high Google page ranking. Those who choose not to invest in search engine optimisation will usually see their website slide down the rankings.

SEO IS NOT GUARANTEED

Contrary to the belief of many people, the SEO process isn’t a five minute job and will not instantly launch your website to the top of the search results. So be prepared to be patient and wait!

Of course there are the following exceptions to the rule:
  • Using pay per click ( PPC ) in order to generate traffic to your website.

  • Black Hat SEO. While it is true that implementing Black Hat SEO techniques may initially result in your website ranking high, rest assured it won’t last long. ie Short term results.

  • Utilising a older and already well established domain name. Some of these older sites will experience more traffic due to their domain name being well trusted.

SEARCH ENGINE OPTIMISATION EFFECTS ON GOOGLE LISTING

Today we have seen an increase in the number of people choosing to use the web in order to locate a specific service or general information on a specific topic, rather than the old fashioned hard copy versions. With that being said, we know that SEO plays a major role in where your website ranks, but how is your website found and displayed in the search returns?

Well here is how

After having entered the required search parameters, otherwise referred to as ‘Keyword Phrase’ into the search box and hit search, causes search engine spiders / crawlers to then begin scouring the web to locate those websites that best meet the search parameters. These websites are then displayed to you in order of their ranking or importance and relevance to the keyword phrase entered.

SEO and Google Page Ranking

COMPONENTS OF THE SEARCH ENGINE OPTIMISATION PROCESS

Before we begin you need to understand that there are two types of SEO techniques. The first being White Hat SEO ( ethical ) and the other being Black Hat SEO ( Unethical ). Choosing and implementing the right SEO strategies is paramount to how well your website will perform.

1/ Keyword analysis & Selection

This process is used to identify the correct search terms which need to be targeted to ensure your website ranks high in the search returns, thus helping generate maximum traffic ( visitors ) to your website. The keyword research enables you to understand what words are being searched for by the online user and how often.

2/ Website Text Content & Copywriting

This process involves writing text content which not only targets your required keywords but also makes your site stand out and be more appealing than your competitor’s websites who are also targeting the same keyword phrases.

Unfortunately ranking at the top for the most popular keywords isn’t easy, hence you must be prepared invest a lot of work and patience if you are to be successful.

3/ Website Design & SEO

The importance of website design cannot be underestimated in SEO. Gone are the days where the web page is design purely for looks. These days web designers need to find that balance between looks and being appealing to search engine spiders.

In SEO the ideal website should contain minimal graphics, animation and tables. The reason for this is text is considered as food for the spiders / crawlers, hence the more text the happier they will be and the higher your website will rank.

You now have to ask yourself the big question. What is more important, having a really upmarket website with all the bells and whistles only to find out that spiders cannot find and index your site or following the right SEO techniques and having a successful website that generates traffic?

4/ Link Building ( Link Exchange )

Link exchange is all about creating a network of links with other websites. Each link is treated by Google as a vote of confidence in your site and can assist in increasing your page rank.

Ideally you should link to those websites offering the same or similar type of service and should be of an equal or higher page rank. Linking to sites with a higher page ranking will see your page rank increase faster.

The best links are those which have been earned and given by choice, for that reason try using a respected link exchange service such as www.linkmarket.com, www.backlinks.com, www.linkpartners.com.

Links exchange request which need to be avoided are those from what are referred to as ‘Out-of-the-blue emails’ with the following message:

Dear Webmaster,

I found your website while searching for relevant link partners. Link exchange is a good method for increasing PR of both of our websites. We are very particular of whom we choose for a link exchange.

We have already added your website to our directory and can be viewed via at the link below and we ask you do the same.

OTHER COMPONENTS USED IN THE SEO PROCESS ARE:

  • Search Engine Submission
  • Google ROR.xml files
  • Google Sitemap.xml files

CONCLUSION

Don’t be fooled into believing that your website will jump to the top overnight. The reality is that search engine optimisation requires patience and ongoing monitoring and tweaking of your website.

Understand that patience is a virtue and that any SEO strategies you implement today won’t necessarily take full effect for approximately 6 to 12 months.
